Photinia Hedge

Photinia Hedge

Photinia shrubs are fast growing evergreen shrubs which are usually planted as boundaries for many gardens. They are famous for their mixture of dense green and red foliage when full grown up. Most of them can grow up to 15 feet in height and they are good options for privacy screening. To keep their vigorous growth, you need to perform some pruning work frequently to encourage the growth of new branches.

Photinia shrubs like full sunlight during growth and they can tolerate some partial shade areas as well. So, some locations with well-drained soil conditions and adequate sunlight during the day will be perfect for them. You should avoid planting them beside houses or structures where the air flow will be blocked. When digging the holes for the shrubs, the size of the hole should be at least twice the size of the root ball to facilitate the growth of the roots. For poor quality soil conditions, you should add some organic amendments to add extra nutrients into the soil. The root ball should be watered thoroughly during the first several weeks to encourage the growth of new roots. Some mulching stuff can be added to keep moisture and suppress weeds. One the roots have been fully established, the frequency of watering should be decreased accordingly. You should always avoid over-watering your plants to lower the risk of rotten roots.

The natural appearance of the Photinia shrubs are like a shrub, but you can prune them into any desired shapes. The ideal pruning time is in winter when all plants are dormant. The winter pruning will lower the risk of fungi infection during the pruning work. The pruning shears should cleaned thoroughly to lower the chance of getting infected by fungi diseases. Photinia shrubs may be susceptible to some pests like mites and scales. Some insecticide can be applied to control the spread of diseases. Also, it might be easily get infected by some fungi diseases like entomosporium leaf spot. To lower the risk of infection, you should try to improve the growing conditions by trimming to improve the air flowing conditions and providing adequate water to them. Some commercial fungicide is also helpful to control the situation.
